Fifteen years ago we set out to do one thing: connect South African companies with the right independent professionals, and stay out of the way while they did good work together. We're still doing it.
Talentbar started in 2010 with a small list of clients in Johannesburg and a smaller list of trusted professionals willing to work flexibly. The premise was simple — companies needed senior skills without permanent overhead, and the best independent operators wanted clients who'd treat them well and pay on time.
Fifteen years on, the premise hasn't changed. We've added contracts, payments, compliance, and a much longer client list — but the core is the same. We know every professional on our roster. We sit across the table from every client. And we still treat one good placement as worth more than a hundred mediocre ones.
Today, we work with companies across South Africa and internationally in three sectors we know deeply: software and tech, marketing and sales, and legal and compliance. We're not trying to be everything to everyone — we'd rather be excellent at a few things, for a long time.
We've stayed mid-sized on purpose. These are the principles that get us out of bed.
We'd rather present three excellent people than thirty average ones. Every placement is hand-picked by someone who has actually worked with the talent before.
Cross-border contracting is a minefield. We handle classification, tax, and labour-law risk so our clients don't have to think about it — and so our talent gets treated fairly.
Our oldest client has been with us since 2012. We measure success in years, not transactions — and we'd rather lose a deal than rush a placement we can't stand behind.
Started with a roster of twelve trusted professionals and three local clients.
Placed a South African senior developer with a London-based fintech. Cross-border work has been core to us ever since.
We moved from introductions-only to handling the full contract, invoicing, and compliance lifecycle for every placement.
Added our third specialist vertical alongside tech and marketing. Today the three sectors are roughly equal in volume.
Fifteen years in, 240+ companies served, 800+ vetted professionals. And we still pick up the phone.
